Key takeaways
- Your Google Business Profile is the most important local SEO asset for home service businesses.
- Create a dedicated page for each core service and each major city or neighborhood you serve.
- A steady stream of recent, detailed reviews influences both rankings and conversions.
- Consistent name, address and phone (NAP) details across directories build trust with Google and AI search.
When a homeowner's AC dies in July or a storm rips shingles off their roof, they don't browse. They grab their phone, search "HVAC repair near me" or "roofer in [city]", and call one of the first three businesses in the map results. If you're not in that local pack, you don't exist for that job.
This checklist is the same framework we use for roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, solar, landscaping and remodeling clients. Work through it top to bottom.
1. Claim and fully optimize your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the engine behind map pack rankings. Treat it like a second homepage.
- Primary category: choose the most specific option (e.g., "Roofing contractor", not "Contractor"). Add relevant secondary categories.
- Services: list every service you offer with a short description.
- Service area: add the cities and ZIP codes you actually serve.
- Hours: keep them accurate, including emergency availability.
- Photos: upload real job photos, trucks, team and before/after shots regularly.
- Posts and Q&A: post offers or recent projects, and seed common questions with clear answers.
2. Build service pages and service-area pages
One generic "Services" page can't rank for everything. Create a dedicated page for each core service — "Roof Replacement", "Storm Damage Repair", "Water Heater Installation" — and, where you have real coverage, pages for your main cities or neighborhoods.
Each page should include: a direct answer to the main question in the first paragraph, what's included, typical pricing ranges or factors, your process, local proof (projects, reviews from that area), FAQs and a clear call to action. Avoid thin "city-swap" pages with identical text — they rarely perform and can hurt trust.
3. Nail your NAP consistency
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. It should be identical on your website, GBP, Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor, BBB, Nextdoor, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places and industry directories. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and AI assistants about which details are correct.

4. Make reviews a system, not a hope
Reviews influence local rankings and, just as importantly, whether people call you. Build a repeatable process:
- Ask every happy customer at the moment of delight — right after the job is completed.
- Send a text with a direct link to your Google review form.
- Follow up once if they haven't left one.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a couple of days.
We automate this with a simple workflow that triggers after an invoice is paid. Read more in our guide on how to get more Google reviews.
5. Speed up your website (especially on mobile)
Most home service searches happen on phones, often in stressful moments. Your site should load fast, show your phone number and a "Get a quote" button immediately, and make the next step obvious. Check your pages with Google's PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest issues first: oversized images, heavy scripts and slow hosting.
6. Add local schema markup
Use LocalBusiness (or a specific subtype such as RoofingContractor, HVACBusiness or Plumber) schema with your name, phone, address or service area, hours, and links to your profiles. Add FAQPage schema to pages with FAQs. This helps search engines — and AI assistants — read your details accurately.
7. Earn local links and mentions
- Sponsor local sports teams, charities and events.
- Join your chamber of commerce and trade associations.
- Partner with complementary businesses (realtors, property managers, insurance agents).
- Pitch helpful seasonal tips to local news ("How to prep your AC for summer").
8. Track what matters
Rankings are nice; calls and booked jobs pay the bills. Track calls from GBP, form submissions, booked appointments and revenue by source. Use call tracking numbers on ads, but keep your main number consistent on GBP and directories.

Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take for a home service business?
Google Business Profile improvements and review growth can move map rankings within a few weeks. Competitive markets typically take three to six months of consistent work on pages, reviews and links to reach the top three.
Do I need a separate page for every city I serve?
Only for areas where you genuinely work and can add unique, useful content such as local projects, reviews and specifics. Thin pages that just swap the city name rarely rank and can undermine trust.
Can I rank in the map pack without a physical storefront?
Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address on Google Business Profile and list the areas they serve instead. Rankings then depend on relevance, prominence and proximity to the searcher.
